Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao Review

3D is all the rage these days. Almost every blockbuster movie is now getting a 3D release, and retail games are starting to pack in the red and blue glasses for an optional 3D mode (G-Force comes to mind). Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao is the first downloadable game that I know of to go 3D, and while it is capable of producing quite impressive results it does seem like a strange feature to include. First of all, you have to provide your own 3D glasses. Not that big a deal, but Invincible Tiger is able to produce fancy stereoscopic 3D visuals, for which you need a special television and expensive 3D goggles (not the cheap red and blue specs). So very few people out there are going to be able to enjoy what this game has to offer. Take away the eye-popping 3D effects and you’re left with a pretty run-of-the-mill beat ‘em up.

Invincible Tiger plays like the NES classic Kung-Fu. Our hero, Han Tao, runs left and right on 2D planes, punching and kicking his way through hordes of increasingly difficult enemies. Certain objects in the environment can be interacted with, indicated by a red aura when you pass by. You may be able to pick up a barrel to toss at a bad guy or scurry up a tree to reach a higher level. Attacking is very simple — X is punch and Y is kick — but you can string together various combinations to create combos. The right stick can be used to evade attacks, which you’ll need to take advantage of when enemies gang up on you from both sides.

Check out this video from Invincible Tiger: The Legend of Han Tao.

At the top of the screen is the Yin Yang meter. Its white bar is built by landing attacks and the black by dodging or taking damage. Han can spend the white meter to meditate and regain health, but he will be left vulnerable to attacks. Once the white and black bars have been built up enough so that they meet you can put Han in Hyperstate, which increases his speed and power. In classic arcade fashion, extra lives can be gained by reaching score milestones
