Electronic Arts has teamed up with toy and game maker Hasbro to bring some of your favorite childhood board games to the Xbox Live Arcade. Dubbed Family Game Night, this collection of kid-friendly classics can be downloaded to your Xbox 360 hard drive and played on your TV screen rather than your nicked-up kitchen table.

To get Family Game Night up and running, just grab the free download (236.6MB) from the Marketplace and then open it up in XBLA. Once it’s installed, you can download the individual games for 800 Microsoft Points (USD $10) each from within the Family Game Night front-end. As with all XBLA games, trial versions are also available for each title.

For our all-encompassing review of the entire interface and its collected games, head over to our overall Family Game Night review. This review focuses solely on one of the classic Hasbro board games available for download: Yahtzee.

Look at how excited he is.

I’ve always loved the dice-rolling pen-and-paper game Yahtzee, but I’ve always hated keeping score, which requires more math than I’m willing to perform in my spare time. Enter the Family Game Night version, which takes all the painful addition out of the process and replaces it with satisfying casual fun.

The goal of Yahtzee is to fill up a scorecard with a variety of poker-like combinations by rolling a set of six dice three times in a row. Smart players will pick and choose which numbers to bank at certain times to play strategy, but much of the game is based on luck. Just ask IGN Xbox 360 editor Erik Brudvig, who rolled three Yahtzees (five dice of the same number) in a single online session. Cheater.

Part of the fun of Yahtzee is dumping your dice into the provided cup and rolling them around until you’re happy with the amount of luck you’ve generated. EA and Hasbro seemed to recognize this, going so far as to include the cup and the ability to control its shake during your roll. It’s a nice touch, and it goes a long way toward making Yahtzee one of the better games in this collection.

Closing Comments
Yahtzee can be a fun distraction or an all day war between dedicated dice-rolling warriors. The Family Game Night version allows room for both, managing to be laid back and intense at the same time. The interface is solid, rolling the dice is fun, and there are no papers or pencils to deal with. So leave the dice in the drawer and fire this one up on your TV instead.
