Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz Review

by admin on Feb.01, 2010, under Review

October 16, 2009
I’m going to start this review with a warning: if you aren’t extraordinarily well-versed in the current happenings and history of European soccer, you’re not going to want to invest in this 800 point ($10) download. But if you’re a true soccer aficionado and you’re looking for a test of your knowledge of the sport, this just might be the game for you.

There’s no question that Football Genius has plenty to offer to the die hard soccer fan. There are five question packs included in the original download with the ability for more downloadable content to eventually come down the pipe. Included in the ten-dollar game are five question packs. There are Germany questions, Spain questions, France questions, Italy questions and England questions to round out the package. With more than 3,500 questions packed into those five question packs, there’s no doubt that your knowledge will be tested.

But it’s not only the number of questions that will keep you guessing, it’s also the game modes and the way the questions are posed. It isn’t all that unlike Scene It! in that you use your avatar as your game character and select either half time or full time games if you’re in for the short or long haul. You can play with up to four players on one console or you can join up with three others online, supposing you can find a game. I had a hell of a time finding anyone to play with despite there being more than 40,000 gamertags on the leaderboards.

As you’re running through either a full or half-game you’ll be presented with plenty of different question types to keep things fresh. You’ll get variants like pictures that slowly come into focus and you’re forced to guess the name of the player or coach, matching player names with regular pictures, and pop-up clues that get more and more obvious as your point reward dwindles among others. There are enough simple and complex ways of posing questions that Football Genius won’t get stale for some time. I do wish that some of the question types would reveal the answers if you get them wrong. It’s tough to improve your knowledge of something if the right answer isn’t revealed when your guess is incorrect.

The questions themselves range from the simple, “Here’s a picture of a player, now select the proper name” to “What was the score in the UEFA Final in 2006?” There’s no question that this game would not have been released in the States had it been on a disc, but as it’s a download it’s understandable why it made its way to the US. Hopefully it will help improve some gamers’ knowledge of a sport that’s typically kicked to the curb in the United States.

The visual presentation in Football Genius is very straightforward. The main menu is home to scrolling avatar icons and there are soccer-centric animations that help transition from one round and question type to the next. Nothing is overly flashy nor is anything underdone. The graphics are pretty much what you’d expect from a ten dollar soccer trivia game.

Closing Comments
Football Genius: The Ultimate Quiz is clearly made for a very niche audience of soccer diehards who know the sport inside and out. I, for one, am not one of those people but was still able to enjoy myself taking stabs at each of the questions that were posed to me. I wish that the answers to some of the tougher queries were explained after you select a wrong answer, but at least the current structure guarantees that if you get the same question again the answer will still be a mystery. While there
