The SEGA Vintage Collection offers classic games from the storied company’s vast library. Most of these titles were originally available on the SEGA Genesis, but some are based off the arcade version. Each sells for 400 MSP ($5), features “enhanced graphics” and include 200 Achievement Points.
Altered Beast was an arcade smash hit in 1988, leading SEGA to pack a less impressive version in with the Genesis system the following year. While many games in SEGA’s Vintage Collection have held up well over the years, this one hasn’t. It’s a checklist of old videogame clichés, with a muscle-bound doofus punching and kicking his way through endless hordes of monsters in order to save a helpless girl. Back in the day, the real draw was the ability to transform into near-invincible beasts halfway through each level. But the controls are so clumsy and the AI so cheap you’ll wish Altered Beast never rose from the grave.
Not quite as cool as it looks.This is a side-scrolling brawler set in ancient Greece starring a warrior who was happily resting in the afterlife until he is dug up and sent to rescue some chick.
